The India Bloc MPs reiterated their demand for the dismissal of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi also joined them. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and other opposition leaders were present during the protest.
The leaders raised slogans including, “Dharmendra Pradhan Astiva, Do.” Parliament has been in a deadlock since the beginning of the monsoon session amid student protests over alleged NEET irregularities and paper leaks. The students were also planning to head to Parliament on Monday, but police deployed tear gas bombs in the middle of the road and arrested 70 protesters.
Govt says it is ready for discussion, Open demands Pradhan out first
While the government said it was ready to hold a discussion on the paper leaks on the floor of the House, the Opposition had pressed for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan before that.
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharjee said: “There will be no discussion on this issue until the education minister resigns… It cannot be a fair discussion until he resigns.” Meanwhile, the union government accused the opposition of politicizing the ongoing student movement and said it was changing its “objectives,” stressing that its doors for dialogue with those leading the protests were “always open,” people familiar with the developments said.
Karg and other opposition leaders called for a debate on paper leaks under Rule 267, which allows urgent issues to bypass business listed in the House.
The Union government criticized the Opposition for these conditions and Vice President Harivansh clarified that the President’s ruling had already specified that discussions could not be allowed under the said rule. The Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned until 12 noon on Thursday, minutes after they began, following loud protests by opposition MPs.
