Motion of no confidence against Om Birla

118 Opposition MPs signed the motion, alleging “partisan” behavior by the Speaker of Parliament after preventing the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, from speaking in the House.

Jagdambika Pal said that 10 hours had been allocated for discussion, and asked the MPs to adhere to the decision. He said that the Speaker of the House of Representatives was generous regarding the permissions and procedures for the opposition resolution.

Questions about the appointment of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives

Before voting on the resolution, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi raised a discussion on the appointment of Deputy Speaker in the Lok Sabha.

Congress MP KC Venugopal said the government has not appointed a Deputy Speaker for the past few years, creating a constitutional vacuum. “You have been appointed by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha,” he said, questioning Jagdambika Pal’s authority. He added that the House of Representatives must elect the person who will preside over the proceedings during the discussion of the resolution.

BJP MPs Ravi Shankar Prasad and Nishikant Dubey said the opposition’s objections were “baseless”.

The budget session of Parliament began on January 28. The first part of the session continues until February 13, and the second part of the budget session concludes on April 2.
