prime minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Congress Party during a public meeting in Bengaluru, accusing the opposition party of “betraying” both allies and the people, and describing it as a “parasitic political force” that lives at the expense of regional parties.

This comes after the Congress party joined hands with actor-turned-politician Vijay Tamilaja Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) to form a coalition government in Tamil Nadu, despite contesting the elections with… DMK, which lost power.

Congress Party leader Rahul Gandhi He was in Chennai to attend Vijay’s swearing-in on Sunday.

Addressing BJP workers and supporters during his visit to Karnataka to mark the 45th anniversary of the Art of Living Foundation, Modi said the Congress has lost public confidence across the country due to what he called “fake assurances”, mismanagement and internal power struggles.

“No Congress state government has returned to power for the second time,” he said, apparently speaking of recent years.

“Within a few months of forming the government, anti-incumbency has started rising against the Congress. This is because the Congress only knows how to betray. They themselves are liars, and their assurances are also fake. In the book of Congress’s power, the chapter on governance does not exist at all,” PM Modi claimed.

He chided the Congress for breaking away from its old ally DMK in Tamil Nadu, and alleged that the party turns on its partners whenever the political equations change.

“The parasitic Congress now needs another party it can rely on to remain relevant,” he said.

TVK’s Joseph Vijay was sworn in as Tamil Nadu state president on Sunday in a colorful ceremony attended by Rahul Gandhi, marking the start of the first non-DMK, non-AIADMK government in the southern state in 60 years, with a promise of transparent governance and an assurance that it would be the sole center of power in the state.

In his maiden speech at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium after taking oath, Vijay said a new era of the regime committed to “true secularism and social justice” has begun. He has in the past described the BJP as his “ideological enemy”, and the Congress and some of its other allies have pointedly described Modi’s party as a “community force”.

Vijay’s government so far has a mix of the young and the experienced, with the 51-year-old actor-turned-politician’s core team finding a place in his first cabinet. Soon after assuming office, CM Vijay signed three files to implement poll-time promises, including 200 units of free power for domestic consumers.

In his speech, Vijay said that he was not of any “royal lineage” and that people welcomed and accepted him.
