NEW DELHI: The National Union of Students of India on Wednesday demanded a CBI and SFIO probe into the recognition process followed by the Institute of Town Planners of India, alleging serious concerns over the legal framework governing recognition of planning institutions and courses.
Addressing a press conference, NSUI National President Vinod Jakhar claimed that questions have been raised regarding the legal authority under which ITPI grants recognition to planning institutions and courses, and said that the issue has created uncertainty for students pursuing planning education.
“The future of thousands of students cannot be jeopardized by regulatory uncertainty. The country deserves full transparency and accountability on this matter,” Jacquard said.
The student organization has called for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Serious Fraud Investigation Office into ITPI’s decisions relating to recognition, approvals, governance and financial transactions, where applicable, claiming that any irregularities or abuse of power must be carefully examined.
Taking aim at the Union government, Jakhar said the Education Ministry should clarify the legal framework governing recognition in education planning and accused it of remaining silent despite recurring controversies in the education sector.
He also demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, saying he should bear “moral responsibility” for the situation.
Among its key demands, NSUI has sought detailed clarification from the Ministry of Education on the mechanism for recognizing planning institutions and courses, protecting the academic and professional interests of students enrolled in B.Plan and M.Plan programmes, taking strict legal action if any violations are proven, and establishing a transparent and legal regulatory mechanism for education planning.
Jacquard warned of nationwide unrest and said the organization would intensify its protests across universities and planning institutions if the government failed to order an investigation into the CBI and SFIO and take corrective measures.
He said: “We will take this battle from the universities to the streets and ensure that the voices of planning students are heard. We will not rest until justice is achieved and accountability is established.”
