Nine people were feared dead and 12 others injured on Sunday after landslides at multiple locations in Mon town in Nagaland, officials said.
Rescue teams recovered five bodies, while four others remained under the rubble, Mon Deputy Commissioner Winnie Konyak told HT. He added that at least 45 homes were destroyed by landslides that occurred in multiple locations across the city between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. “We have recovered a total of five bodies so far – four this afternoon and one more this evening. Four are still missing, so our search and rescue teams are trying to locate them or their remains,” the deputy commissioner said.

“Mon town, as of now, is completely cut off. The roads leading to the district headquarters from Tizit and Naginimura are cut off due to flood inundation in the two sub-districts; the road from Mokokchung is not passable because the linking bridge collapsed. The only option is to travel through Tuensang district, doubling the travel time,” Konyak said, adding that the rescue operation is underway and a relief camp has been set up at the Konyak union office in Mon town.
Prime Minister Neiphiu Rio announced an ex gratia payment $4 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased person and $74,000 for all infected people.

According to an official bulletin, the state government is closely monitoring the evolving situation resulting from the ongoing extreme weather events affecting several parts of the state.
Aside from Mon District, Tuli Subdivision in Mokokchung District and other affected areas also saw severe impacts, including landslides, flash floods, road closures and damage to public infrastructure and private property.
