The IMD has issued a red alert warning of heavy rain in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar districts till Wednesday evening.

Rains during the night and early morning intensified monsoon conditions across Mumbai in Maharashtra and adjoining areas on Wednesday, disrupting normal life in several low-lying areas.

The Meteorological Department also predicted heavy rain accompanied by lightning, and urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and be careful.

Civil unrest was reported in several parts of the city, with heavy rains leading to waterlogging, traffic congestion and tree-falling incidents, while major water storage levels also saw a sharp decline.

Here are the most important updates about Mumbai rains-

  1. The IMD issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar districts till noon and then extended it till at least 7 pm, warning of heavy rain in isolated areas. Raigad and Ratnagiri were also later placed under red alert, while Sindhudurg, Pune, Satara and Kolhapur Palghar remained under orange alert.
  2. Several areas in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai reported waterlogging, including stretches in Worli and parts of Navi Mumbai, after heavy rains lashed Maharashtra, according to images shared by ANI.
  • Multiple parts of Mumbai on Wednesday received more than 100 mm of rain, leading to waterlogging in Andheri Metro and other low-lying areas, officials said.
  • According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Powai Lake started flooding around 5.30 am on Wednesday. The lake has a storage capacity of 545 crore liters and provides water for industrial use.
  • A large tree falling on Swami Vivekananda (SV) Road in Andheri disrupted traffic, with fire brigades and BMC teams deploying mechanized equipment to remove the obstructions.
  • Heavy rains also led to major traffic congestion on the Western Express Expressway in eastern Santa Cruz, causing delays for commuters during peak hours.
  • Meanwhile, the city’s seven reservoirs were at 7.18% of total capacity as of 6 a.m. on Wednesday, sharply lower compared to 41.17% on July 1, 2025, raising concerns about water availability.
