New Delhi has approved a comprehensive set of rail infrastructure projects aimed at decongesting traffic, increasing line capacity, improving safety measures and enabling faster, more reliable passenger and freight movement across the country, the railway ministry said on Monday.

Multiple rail infrastructure projects approved to ease congestion, improve safety: Ministry of RailwaysA press release from the ministry said these approvals cover line doubling, third and fourth lines, bypass corridors and improved electronic interlocking systems of the South, North and South East Railways.

“Barbenda-Damrughutu doubling and Jharkhand’s Damrughutu-Bokaro Steel City 3rd and 4th lines are major capacity expansion projects under South Eastern Railway and cornerstones of India’s Energy, Minerals and Cement Corridor.”

It added, “Currently, the line operates at 108% utilisation, with a train hold of 90-150 minutes, operates 78 trains per day and supports a freight throughput of 35.22 MTPA.”

Highlighting approval of electronic interlocking at 34 stations at cost ₹421.41 crore across Northern Railway routes where Kavach is being introduced, the ministry said it will enhance safety and operational efficiency.

“This includes 21 stations in the Delhi division ₹292.24 crores in Ambala division and cost of 13 stations ₹129.17 crore,” the ministry said.

According to Ministry sources, sanctioned cost of Rajpura bypass line under Northern Railway ₹411.96 crore will significantly increase capacity and operational efficiency on the Ambala-Jalandhar section, one of the busiest corridors of the Northern Railway.

The press note outlines two doubling projects to double the Alappuzha-Ambalapuzha cost ₹324.16 crores in Kerala and double the expenditure in Irugur-Podanu ₹277.42 crore in Tamil Nadu saying it will significantly improve the line’s capacity and freight operations.

Emphasizing the benefits of another bypass project, the cost of the Palakkad Town-Parli bypass line ₹163.57 crore, the ministry said it would provide immediate operational and passenger benefits by eliminating engine reversals at Palakkad Junction in Kerala for multiple train services.

“This will reduce the average detention of passenger trains by 40-44 minutes and freight detention by up to 120 minutes per train, while also supporting additional passenger services planned from Palakkad Junction,” the statement said.

“By streamlining train movements, the bypass will significantly improve punctuality on routes connecting Shoranur, Thiruvananthapuram and Pollachi, while decongesting one of the busiest junctions on the Southern Railway,” it added.
