While the southwest monsoon is set to enter India through Kerala around June 4, the short spell of pleasant weather in Delhi is slowly starting to lose steam, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting a gradual rise in temperatures. Weather activity is also increasing across western India, with Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan Goa likely to witness scattered thunderstorms, storms and rain amid developing monsoon conditions.

The IMD said on Tuesday that the southwest monsoon is likely to begin over Kerala around June 4, marking the official start of the rainy season in the country, though large parts of India are expected to witness thunderstorms, gusty winds and heavy rain during the week.

Most important weather updates:

Delhi weather: Delhi and neighboring northwestern states are likely to witness scattered rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and wind speeds of up to 40-50 kmph between June 2 and 6, the IMD said on Tuesday. The IMD also warned of thunderstorms with wind speeds of 50-60 kmph and gusts of up to 70 kmph over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on June 3 and 4.

Dust storms over Rajasthan: Similar thunderstorm conditions were forecast across Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, with isolated hailstorms possible over Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan on June 3 and 4. Dust storm activity is also expected at isolated places in western Rajasthan on June 3.

Weather in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra: In western India, scattered rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds are likely over Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Gujarat from June 2 to 6. Gujarat and parts of Maharashtra may witness thunderstorms with wind speeds of up to 70 kmph, while isolated hailstorm activity is also expected over Madhya Maharashtra. Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra were under yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning and storms on Wednesday, June 3, while five districts – Amravati, Kolhapur, Satara, Aurangabad and Jalna – were under orange IMD alert.

Kerala, Tamil Nadu Weather: Southern states are expected to remain among the wettest regions this week, according to IMD forecasts. Kerala is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rains between June 2 and 8, while Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Lakshadweep are also expected to witness heavy rains. Thunderstorms with gusty winds are likely across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, with thunderstorms expected in parts of Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh until June 4. The IMD has placed parts of Kerala under orange alert for June 4, the expected date of arrival of the southwest monsoon.

Northeast India: Widespread light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is also likely in northeastern India over the next five days, the IMD said. Heavy rains are expected in Arunachal Pradesh until June 8 and in the states of Assam and Meghalaya from June 5 to 8.

East and Central India: In eastern and central India, states including Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha are likely to witness thunderstorms and gusty winds during the week. Odisha and Madhya Pradesh may also witness severe thunderstorms, while isolated hailstorm activity is likely over Madhya Pradesh.
