Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked the Congress Party for leaving the country in “the abyss of helplessness, want and inferiority complex” due to slow economic growth when it was in power from the 1950s to the 1980s. While addressing the NDA leaders’ meeting at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi, Modi said that although Congress has been responsible for India’s slow growth for years, the country’s huge Hindu population has been blamed.

Prime Minister Modi said that instead of calling the slow growth rate the “Hindu growth rate”, a term which, according to him, has been subtly used for years, it should be called the “Congress growth rate”.

The Prime Minister said that the country’s growth accelerated only when the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government came to power.

“The Congress had plunged the country into an abyss of impotence, want and inferiority complex. The nation had been conditioned to believe that India’s development inevitably moved at a slow pace, and that rapid growth was simply not possible here. Quite disingenuously, this slow growth was called the ‘Hindu growth rate’, meaning that while the method, responsibility and failure were all the responsibility of the Congress, the stigma was attached to the country’s vast Hindu party. Prime Minister Modi, who became India’s longest-serving Prime Minister, said in June 10, bypassing Jawaharlal Nehru.

“In fact, this phenomenon should have been called ‘Congress Growth Rate’. This ‘Congress Growth Rate’ was characterized by a complete absence of governance, policy, intent and decisiveness. It was under Atal ji’s leadership that the NDA government came to power for the first time; only then did we get a glimpse of what accelerated development looks like. But unfortunately, in 2004, the country once again fell into a spiral of instability and Congress’s stranglehold,” he added.

Prime Minister Modi alleged that the Congress dragged the country into scams worth several lakh crore rupees.

“The fate of the nation changed again when the NDA government was formed in 2014. The country witnessed the pace of development when intentions, policy and decision-making align and work in unison. The nation witnessed tasks that used to take decades being accomplished in mere months,” he added.

Modi said India has made tremendous progress on the industrialization front and done significant work for farmers and people with special abilities, ensuring that no one is left behind over the past 12 years.

Prime Minister Modi wondered that if so much could be achieved in 12 years, why had it not happened in previous decades.

“This shows the difference between the growth rate in the Congress era and the growth rate in the NDA era. One system made people wait; today’s system delivers results. One system used to disrupt and derail work; today’s system ensures work gets done on time and at scale. The story from 2014 to 2026 is not just a story of statistics. It is the story of an India that, for the first time, is starting to function at its full potential, an India that sets ambitious goals and works tirelessly to achieve them,” he said.
