Aizawl, Mizoram’s sole Rajya Sabha member K Vanlaalvena on Thursday urged the Center to expedite three key road projects, including two along the India-Myanmar border, to strengthen national security and boost regional trade, an official statement said here.
Mizoram MP urges Center to fast-track border road projectsDuring a discussion during the ongoing budget session in the Assembly, the MP highlighted two primary infrastructure gaps – lack of high-capacity connectivity at the Myanmar border and increasing traffic congestion between Aizawl and Sairang railway stations.
Vanlalvena requested the Center to designate two strategic routes connecting Hanthial to Saisihchuah in Longtlai district as national highways.
Two important routes terminate at the Myanmar border and pass through several important villages, including Tarpho, Cherholun, Thingsai, Sangau, South Vanlaiphai and Pangkhua.
Highlighting the significant infrastructural disparity along the border, the MP claimed that the Myanmar government had completed a double-lane highway from Hakha in Chin state to Saisihhua on the Indo-Myanmar border in 2020.
Even as the Ministry of Commerce and Industry designated Saisihchuah as an official border haat, India lacked proper road connectivity to facilitate large-scale trade, he said.
“Upgrading these routes to national highways is essential to meet the goals of the country’s Act East policy, strengthen national security and enhance the economic development of the tribal people of Mizoram,” Vanlaalvena was quoted as saying in the statement.
Apart from border connectivity, the MP expressed concern over the 21 km Aizawl-Sairang corridor.
He pointed out that the recent opening of the Sairang railway station has led to a huge increase in traffic.
Stating that the existing National Highway-6 is no longer sufficient to handle the increased traffic volume, the MP urged the Center to upgrade the stretch to a four-lane highway to prevent bottlenecks and support the growing logistics needs of the state.
