A total of 1,076 Indian nationals have been deported from the US so far this year, while the figure for 2025 has reached 3,567, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday, stressing that both sides are committed to working against illegal immigration.

The US administration has increased deportations of illegal immigrants from around the world as part of a crackdown that began shortly after President Donald Trump took office last year.

The US administration has increased deportations of illegal immigrants from around the world as part of a crackdown that began shortly after President Donald Trump took office last year. The number of Indians deported from the US last year was the highest in 16 years, according to figures presented by the government in Parliament in 2025.

“A total of 1,076 Indian nationals have been deported from the US to India so far this year,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a regular press conference. In response to a question, he said that during the year 2025, 3,567 people were deported from the United States.

Jaiswal said the two sides are in close contact on deportation, immigration and mobility issues, and are working to stop illegal immigration without affecting legal immigration.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told Parliament last December that the government had engaged US authorities to ensure that Indian nationals being deported were not subjected to ill-treatment, and that women and children in deportation flights were not shackled and chained.

The mistreatment of 73-year-old Harjit Kaur during her deportation last year, and the shackles of women and children on board the deportation flight last February, sparked controversy, and India officially protested these incidents.

The number of Indians deported from the US last year was the highest since 2009, when Washington repatriated 734 Indians, according to figures presented by the Ministry of External Affairs in Parliament. The number rose to 1,303 in 2016 and to 2,042 in 2019.
