Imphal: There was tension in Kingam Chingmang area of Imphal West district on Tuesday after a group of Kuki women prevented a Manipur government team led by Sekmai Sub-Deputy Collector (SDC) from conducting an official survey on resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), officials said.

Security personnel stand guard in Imphal (ANI)Officials said the survey is being conducted as part of the state’s plan to resettle more than 10,000 displaced IDP families by March 31.

A team led by the SDC, along with some people staying at a relief camp in Imphal West’s Khurkhul, were allegedly confronted by the Kuki-jo women to block and disrupt the survey. The team had earlier visited the relief camp in Khurkhul to verify the details of the IDPs.

Officials said an SDC office worker and a displaced person were detained by the Kuki-Jo women for an unspecified period before being released. Security forces deployed at Leimakhong were also alerted and later escorted the survey team back to safety.

Following the incident, survey work at Kingam Chingmang in Imphal West has been suspended as tension continues in the area, officials said.

According to the home department of Manipur, the state government, which has been under central rule since February 13, 2025, has resettled around 3,700 displaced families comprising around 16,500 IDPs by January 29.

Ethnic clashes erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, during protests against a court order to include the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes list. Violence quickly spread across the state, displacing thousands of people who fled their homes, often taking refuge in forests or crossing into neighboring states. The conflict has so far claimed over 260 lives, displacing over 60,000 people on both sides.
