Imphal, Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh on Wednesday visited Jiribam district, worst hit by communal violence, and met the internally displaced persons of the Meiti and Hamar communities, stressing the need for reconciliation and lasting peace.

Manipur CM meets IDPs at Jiribam, stresses need for reconciliationHe also emphasized that his government is dedicated to addressing the resettlement challenges faced by IDPs.

During his first visit to Ziribam district after being sworn in as chief minister, Khemchand spoke to Meiti IDPs at a relief camp set up at Ziribam Higher Secondary School, officials said.

Khemchand also visited Mongbung Meitei village and interacted with the villagers and told them that both sides should start communicating with each other to overcome the trust gap, they said.

The chief minister also told the IDPs that their concerns are being addressed by the district administration and houses are being constructed for them, and they are expected to be completed by March.

Khemchand said efforts had already started during the President’s rule in Manipur to resettle the displaced.

He said that while it was too early to announce a specific timeframe or resolution mechanism, the government was committed to addressing these challenges.

“Since I took oath as Chief Minister last week, my visit to Jiribam is the first outside Imphal. I think Jiribam is the most important place in Manipur and has the potential to become a business hub. To make Jiribam a business hub, peace is essential,” he said.

“What happened happened. It was a nightmare. We should move forward with the thought of living peacefully,” the CM added.

He appealed to local clubs, mera paibis, journalists and all to take equal responsibility to restore peace and normalcy in the district and state.

Earlier in the day, he interacted with IDPs from the Hamar community and urged the people to remain calm and united.

During his interaction with the relatives of Josangkim, a 31-year-old Hamar woman killed in November 2024 amid ethnic clashes in Jiribam district, Singh emphasized the need for reconciliation.

“We have to find out why we cannot come together. First, we are all human beings, then we are Indians. We have to think about the younger generation and keep ourselves calm,” he said.

More than 260 people have been killed and thousands left homeless in ethnic violence in the state since May 2023.
