A video circulating on social media on Saturday showed a late-night quarrel between a man and a Muslim couple in Gaur City 2 in Greater Noida. The man has since been arrested, police said.

The incident took place late on Thursday night at White Orchid Market in Gour City 2. The suspect has been identified as Mukesh Kumar, a resident of Ram Shyam area of ​​Chipyana Buzorg.

According to the police, an argument started when Mukesh Kumar objected to a man named Imran (one name) and his wife standing near his car, which led to a verbal altercation.

What happened

“A dispute arose when the suspect objected to them parking near his car. Based on the complaint filed by Inspector Imran, a case was registered at the police station,” said KG Sharma, station house officer (SHO) of Bisrakh police station.

Police said the suspect appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time.

“He was drinking alcohol at his place and there was an argument over something. We have arrested this person from his place and registered a case against him under an unknown report,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Pawan Kumar said.

In the video that has since gone viral, the suspect can be seen surrounded by a group of people and engaging in a heated exchange.

Passersby were heard wondering about his behaviour, with some claiming that he was drinking alcohol and disturbing others because of their religion.

Voices can be heard in the video saying: “You have no right to ask questions,” while another person claims that the man was harassing people after consuming alcohol.

Police work

The suspect has been booked under multiple sections of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, police said. Article 170 relates to arrest to prevent the commission of a cognizable crime, Article 126 relates to security to maintain peace in other cases, and Article 135 deals with investigating the truth of information. Further legal action is underway.
