Base prices for many MacBook and iPad models have risen between 20% and 42% compared to their original prices. According to updated pricing on Apple’s website, the price of the M5-powered MacBook Pro lineup has been increased by 20%. Pricing for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro chip starts now $2,99,900 USD, up from the original launch price of Rs $2,49,900.

The iPad Air has seen a steeper rise, with the entry-level 13-inch iPad Air now costing less $1,19,900, up from its launch price of Rs $84,900. However, the price of the iPhone, the company’s main source of revenue, is unchanged at the moment. After the price increase, Apple shares fell by up to 6.

Why did Apple announce a price increase?

An Apple spokesperson noted the “extraordinary increase” in demand for memory and storage. “The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centers has led to an extraordinary increase in demand for memory and storage,” Apple said in a statement sent to multiple media outlets.

“We have never seen component prices increase this much and this quickly,” the spokesman said, according to Agence France-Presse. The rapid development of AI data centers has dramatically increased the cost of memory chips and RAM, components found in almost all electronic devices. The chips have seen quarterly price increases of at least 50 percent since late 2025, Agence France-Presse reported.

In announcing the price hikes, the California-based tech giant said it had “protected our customers from these increases thus far,” saying it could no longer continue to do so.

“…We have now reached a point where we need to start raising prices on a number of products, including today’s increases for iPad and Mac. We know this is unwelcome news, and we are working tirelessly to find solutions,” Apple said in the statement.

The price hikes were suggested by outgoing Apple CEO Tim Cook last week, telling the Wall Street Journal that price increases were “inevitable.”

“There is a shortage of supply at a time when consumers want hardware and memory people are passing on huge price increases,” said Cook, who has issued repeated warnings about rising costs. He described the rise in prices as a “hundred-year flood.”

While iPhone prices remain the same, analysts expect them to also rise later this year, according to the Associated Press.
