Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth was appointed on Saturday as Chief of Army Staff, the government said in a statement, adding that he will assume office on June 30.

“I have been directed to convey the President’s approval for the appointment of Lt. Gen. Dheeraj Seth, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, as the next Chief of Army Staff with the rank of General, effective 30 (th) June 2026, to Vice-General Upendra Dwivedi, PVSM, AVSM, with a term up to 31 August 2028,” a Defense Ministry statement said.
Lt. Gen. Seth was serving as Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS), a position he assumed in April this year. He will take over as Army Chief as the current Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi, will retire from service on June 30.
Lt. Gen. Seth is an alumnus of the National Defense Academy, Khadakwasla, and was commissioned into the Armored Corps in December 1986.

“His command duties include an armored regiment in the desert sector, an armored brigade in the western theater, and a counter-insurgency force in Jammu and Kashmir,” the government statement said.
He next commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the Army’s leading strike formations; He served as Commander-in-Chief of the Delhi District; He commanded the Southwest Command and the Southern Command.
Lt. Gen. Seth has had the rare distinction of leading the Army’s two operational commands – Southwest Command and Southern Command – and providing strategic oversight across critical theaters for more than two and a half years.
During his tenure, he held numerous key staff and strategic appointments that significantly impacted operational planning, force management, and capability development.
