The accused has been identified as Najeeb, a native of Beringala in Kunnathunad near here.

Rural police chief in Ernakulam, KS Sudarshan, told PTI that Najeeb was arrested in Uttar Pradesh.

“After our team busted the racket, Najib switched off his mobile phone and left the state. After scientific investigation, our team tracked down the accused in Uttar Pradesh and arrested him. We suspect that he was planning to flee to Nepal,” Sudarshan said.

He said that if a flight is available, Najeeb will be brought to Kochi on Sunday itself.

Najib is the main accused in multiple cases registered in different regions related to forged documents allegedly used to facilitate organ donation.

The police arrested Najib’s wife on Saturday.

Earlier, police arrested Sunny Varghese and his wife Saini Varghese, residents of Murakkala in Kunnathunad, and Sanoj, of Chillakkulam, Pattimatum.

Additionally, Kiliculur police arrested two persons named Sreeja and Sudhir in Kollam district in connection with a related case.

According to the police, the organ donation process for donors and recipients involves complex verification procedures that require certificates from police, local bodies, doctors, MLAs and MLAs, and the accused allegedly forged such documents.

The FIRs stated that the gang was active since August 2023 and had allegedly forged letterheads of two private hospitals in Kochi, fake police clearance certificates and forged letters and official papers in the names of former Uduma MLA CH Kunhambu, former Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden, former Kothuparamba MLA KP Mohanan, former Aroor MLA Daleema Jojo, former Kerala CM Whip N Jayaraj, and Alathur MP KR. Radhakrishnan.

Apart from this, the accused allegedly issued fake letterheads in the name of Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ambalapuzha and Assistant Commissioner of Kunnamkulam Police.

The police also alleged that the accused had forged recommendation letters of several eminent doctors.

Officials said data of organ donors linked to the racket was also recorded.

The cases have been registered under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act relating to forgery and use of forged documents.
