background

Rajan J Balan, 63, is a businessman and a long-time presence in Thrissur local government. Information regarding his early life is not widely available, and his education is recorded as having studied up to 10th standard.

Balan built his profile mainly through the civil administration. He served as the fifth Mayor of Thrissur Municipal Corporation and has been associated with the body since its formation, including serving as a consultant.

According to his election declaration, Balan declared assets worth approx $2.67 Crores. Despite limited publicly available information about his early years, his career reflects a steady rise through grassroots politics and municipal leadership in Thrissur.

What happened in the previous elections?

The Indian National Congress held the Thrissur seat for several terms, including a win in 2011 when Tiramil Ramakrishnan defeated CPI’s P. Balachandran by a huge margin. However, the political balance shifted in 2016, when the Communist Party of India regained the constituency, with VS Sunil Kumar winning in a tougher contest.

CPI retained the seat in 2021, with P. Balachandran claiming victory again, underscoring the constituency’s trend towards close elections in recent years. With margins narrowing over time, Thrissur has emerged as a seesaw seat where results remain uncertain.

In the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, Balan is trying to regain the Congress seat. He is focusing his campaign on local civic concerns such as traffic congestion and waste management, emphasizing his administrative experience as a former mayor and councilor. Although the seat has witnessed competitive contests in successive elections, the result in Thrissur is expected to be closely watched.
