Amrita Hospital said in a statement that Srikuti, a resident of Palodi, suffered a serious brain injury and was unconscious and experiencing serious breathing difficulties when she was admitted to the hospital.

Hospital authorities said she was also injured in her left shoulder.

After initial treatment at Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College, she was transferred to Amrita Hospital, where a tracheostomy was performed to help her breathe and a feeding tube was inserted, the statement said.

As part of a structured neuro-rehabilitation programme, she underwent oxygen therapy, breathing exercises, swallowing therapy to help her eat independently, cognitive stimulation treatments to restore memory and thinking abilities, and graded training to gradually regain mobility, hospital authorities said.

“Coordinated efforts by specialists in otolaryngology, orthopedics, neurology, endocrinology and gastroenterology helped bring her back to life. Srikuti has now regained the ability to eat on her own, walk and talk – something she and her family consider nothing short of a miracle,” the statement read.

Priyadarshini, Srikutty’s mother, told reporters that her daughter still needs help walking and will undergo ayurvedic treatment in Malappuram to improve her mobility.

“Before she was taken to the hospital, she could only open one eye and was completely bedridden with no response. Now she can walk with support and both eyes are open. However, there are some nerve-related issues and for surgery on her shoulder, we will go back to the hospital.”

The mother said that the family will submit an application to the court for compensation and will also seek government assistance.

“We were expecting government support earlier,” she said. “There was some help at first, but it faded as the matter lost public interest.”

On November 2, Sreekutty and a friend were traveling in the unreserved coach of the Kerala Express when she was allegedly pushed near Varkala.

Police arrested Suresh Kumar of Panchamudu, who was allegedly drunk and angry after the victim refused to move away from the entrance.

Police filed an indictment in the case in January.
