Since the Congress won the Karnataka Assembly elections in 2023, there has been constant talk of a power-sharing arrangement between CM Siddaramaiah and his deputy Shivakumar, which was reportedly endorsed by the party’s central leadership, and which could involve a transfer of power after two-and-a-half years.

Karnataka CM Declaration | Key points

– The Congress called a meeting of its legislators in Karnataka on Saturday after holding marathon meetings in Delhi with Siddaramaiah and K.D. Shivakumar to outline the new government as the southern state prepares for the chief minister’s transition on Friday, a day after Siddaramaiah stepped down after months of speculation.

– While the name of the next chief minister has not yet been officially announced, the most important discussions that took place on Friday were the future role of Siddaramaiah and the number of new deputy chief ministers under Shivakumar. The party was considering restricting the number of these representatives to two from the previous formula, which included four, according to a previous HT report quoting leaders familiar with the matter.

– Siddaramaiah, who resigned on Thursday, said he had rejected an offer to enter the Rajya Sabha, adding that he wanted to serve the state and was not interested in national politics.

– Photos released from the meetings showed Siddaramaiah’s son Yatindra Siddaramaiah alongside senior Congress leaders, fueling speculation about his possible entry into the government. Some reports suggested that he could be nominated as deputy prime minister, but leaders involved in the discussions said Yatindra is more likely to enter the government as a minister.

A broader list of potential Cabinet candidates also began circulating within congressional circles on Friday evening. The leaders whose names are being discussed for inclusion in the new government are Yatindra Siddaramaiah, A S Ponnana, Birathi Suresh, HC Mahadevappa, Priyank Karg, MP Patel, G Parameshwara, Krishna Peregowda, Santosh Lad, Dinesh Gundu Rao, Lakshmi Hebbalkar, Ramalinga Reddy, Rizwan Arshad, UT Khader and Sharath. Bachegowda, as per an earlier HT report.

The committee supervises the implementation of social welfare plans through structures operating at the state, district, council or taluk levels.

However, people familiar with the matter said Siddaramaiah sought a broader coordination mechanism linking the Congress organization with the state government.

An earlier HT report quoted a senior leader familiar with the discussions as saying: “The BJP in Karnataka has a state president but also has a coordination committee headed by BS Yeddyurappa, which acts as an advisory body. Something similar is what is being looked for.”
