Chandra Kumar Bose, grandnephew of freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose, described joining the BJP as a “historic mistake” on Friday, saying the realization came “sooner rather than later”.

In a strongly worded statement, the leader claimed that any party whose sole aim is to create division and polarization among voters cannot be supported for electoral gains.

He stressed the principled position and added that “sectarianism cannot be fought with sectarianism,” calling instead for unity between communities.

“Joining the BJP was a ‘historical mistake’ – but I realized it not too late, but sooner! If the party’s sole aim is to create division and polarization among voters just to win elections, then I cannot accept it! You cannot fight communalism with communalism! Let us unite all communities to protect the framework of our nation. To defeat the forces of division bent on destroying the country, the India-Workers-People’s Alliance must come together. Jai Hind,” he wrote on X.

Why did Chandra Kumar Bose resign from the BJP?

Bose, who joined the BJP in 2016, resigned in 2023, citing a lack of support for his ideological and strategic vision within the party. In his letter addressed to JP Nadda, the then BJP president, with copies to Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, Bose explained that he joined the BJP inspired by Modi’s leadership and development agenda, with the aim of promoting the inclusive ideology of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. However, his vision did not receive any support from the party.

He said his aim is to create an ‘Azad Hind Morcha’ within the party to unite people outside religion, caste and creed. However, Bose expressed disappointment that his efforts did not receive any support from the party leadership either at the Central Bengal or West Bengal levels.

Bose also revealed that his detailed proposals, including Bengal’s communication strategy, were ignored. As he said: “My zealous promotional efforts to achieve these laudable goals received no support from the BJP… My proposals were ignored.”

He concluded that under these circumstances it had become impossible for him to continue in the party in good conscience.

Recently, Netaji’s grandson was in the news when the freedom fighter’s hat went missing from the museum in the Red Fort. Later, the Archaeological Survey of India clarified that the cover was safe and was recently moved to Port Blair for an exhibition.

However, in a subsequent social media post, Boss said that individuals familiar with the original artifact believed the recovered lid did not appear to be authentic, and called for a thorough investigation and proper verification of the artifact.
