Several users across the country on Tuesday reported difficulty in making digital payments through the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), with transactions on several popular payment apps failing during the evening.

According to Downdetector, UPI experienced outages on Tuesday evening as users reported errors in completing online transactions. (Mint)Outage-tracking platform Downdetector showed a sharp increase in complaints related to UPI services, logging around 577 reports at around 7:00 pm. At the same time, social media platforms were flooded with user complaints citing failed payments, delayed fund transfers and non-functional QR code scans.

Users said major UPI-enabled apps like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm were affected. Many have complained of receiving error messages such as “Service provider not available” while making payments to merchants, transferring money to contacts or completing online purchases.

Downdetector data shows that Google Pay alone accounted for 141 user reports by 7:07 pm, while Paytm users also identified outages and transaction failures.

The disruption triggered a wave of questions and reactions online, with users asking questions like, “Is UPI down?” and sharing screenshots of failed transactions.

The complaints were widespread, with users in major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bengaluru reporting issues, suggesting a nationwide impact on digital payment services during peak hours.
