Iran expressed its gratitude to India on Monday for its participation in the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on February 28 in strikes launched by the United States that led to the West Asian war.

The Iranian Embassy in India wrote a letter of thanks to India for the gesture and said it represented a “strong expression of mutual respect and sincere solidarity.”

An Indian delegation including Congress Party leader and former Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid, Peoples Democratic Party Chairperson Mehbooba Mufti, Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, and Bihar Governor Lieutenant General (retired) Syed Ata Hasnain, represented India at Khamenei’s funeral last week in Tehran.

She added that the presence of political leaders, members of Parliament, scholars, eminent intellectuals, religious leaders and diverse religious communities in India reflects the “deep historical, cultural and humanitarian ties” between India and Iran.
Khamenei’s funeral procession lasts for days
Pictures shared by the Iranian Embassy in India showed that several religious leaders from India also paid tribute to Khamenei in Tehran. Iran has invited nearly 100 countries, including Pakistan, Russia and China, to attend Khamenei’s funeral, which will last for approximately six days before his burial in his hometown of Mashhad on July 9. The funeral procession will be carried out across multiple cities in Iran and Iraq – Najaf and Karbala.

On Monday, Iran began a procession through Tehran for Khamenei’s funeral. The flag-draped coffin of Khamenei and his family members, who were killed on February 28 in an airstrike at the beginning of the war waged by Israel and the United States, were placed on a truck, the Associated Press reported. The authorities decorated the side of the truck in the form of a decorative net surrounding the Imam’s shrine.
Revolutionary Guard Gen. Hassan Hassanada, who is supervising the procession, said the coffins will be transported through the streets of Tehran on their way to Mehrabad International Airport on a 12-hour journey.
