‘Insensitive’: KEM Hospital reacts to Sejal Pawar’s statements on Praneet More’s show, decides action after meeting parents

The King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Mumbai has termed Dr Sejal Pawar’s remarks about a “male corpse” made on comedian Praneet More’s show as insensitive and unacceptable.

In a statement issued on Friday, the hospital said it had taken “serious note” of the statements made by Pawar, an MBBS student at the institution. The clip from Praneet More’s show has gone viral recently, along with Himanshu Jangra’s song ‘ $Note 370 Biryani, sparked backlash on social media.

What KEM Hospital said

KEM Hospital said it formed an investigation committee upon receiving the complaints. “The committee reviewed the entire video recording and interacted with the student in question. The Dean’s Office has now received the initial fact-finding report.”

“The initial report indicates that some remarks made during the program were objectionable and insensitive, and inconsistent with the dignity, compassion, self-control and professional responsibility expected of a medical student. The student in question also submitted a written apology acknowledging that some of her statements were inappropriate and may have caused distress.”

Pawar will be counseled at the institute on Saturday in the presence of her parents and appropriate action will be taken thereafter. “The disciplinary decision/order, as deemed appropriate by the competent authority under applicable rules, will be issued and sent in writing. After completion of these procedures, she will be allowed to accompany her parents/guardians,” KEM Hospital said.

While Pawar has reportedly issued a written apology, senior doctors are still upset over her statements made on a public platform.

What led to the anger?

A clip from Pawar at More’s show has gone viral where she is heard making remarks about male corpses and comparing the sizes of male corpses’ genitals.

After the backlash, Segal shared a video on Instagram and apologized for the comment. She said: “I really want to address an excerpt from a recent video that was circulating. Having watched it again, I completely understand why people were upset by what I said. The subject is sensitive, and my comments came out in a way they shouldn’t have. Although there was absolutely no intention to disrespect anyone, I realize that impact matters more than intent.”
