Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that India is seen as a “trusted partner for growth”, evident in recent trade deals with the US, the UK and the European Union, the “mother of all deals”.

While addressing a community program, Prime Minister Modi Said that “Trust has become India’s strongest currency and mentioned the trade deals that India has agreed with several countries, news agency PTI reported. He also said that the Indian diaspora has acted as a living bridge between India and Malaysia and announced a new consulate in the island nation.

About three million people of Indian origin live in Malaysia, the second largest in the world. Majority of them are of Tamil origin.

During his speech, PM Modi highlighted the singing prowess of his Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim and emphasized his love for Tamil songs of legendary actor-politician MG Ramachandran (MGR).

Prime Minister called Tamil ‘India’s gift to the world’Talking about the Tamil language, the Prime Minister said, “Tamil is India’s gift to the world.” He called Tamil literature eternal and universal. He quoted Indian Vice President CP Radhakrishnan and Union Ministers S Jaishankar and Nirmala Sritharaman as saying that the Tamil people had “served humanity with their talent.”

Appreciating the talent of the Tamil Diaspora, PM Modi said that the Thiruvalluvar Chair was established in the University of Malaya inspired by Tamil history. “We will now set up our Thiruvalluvar center to further strengthen our shared heritage,” the prime minister was quoted as saying.

The visit to Malaysia marks the Prime Minister’s first foreign visit in 2026. PM Modi said that he was friends with the Malaysian Prime Minister even before Anwar Ibrahim became the Prime Minister. He emphasized on ‘IMPACT’ (India-Malaysia Partnership for Advancing Collective Transformation), calling it a watchword for India’s relationship with Malaysia.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Malaysia on Saturday and received a warm welcome at the event, where more than 800 dancers performed Indian classical and folk dances. After this, Prime Minister Modi and his counterpart traveled in the same car and arrived amid chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Modi, Modi’.

Malaysia Prime Minister says India is among top trading partnersHighlighting India’s importance, the Malaysian Prime Minister said India is among the country’s “top trading partners”. “It’s not just goods that move between us, but in 2025, more than 1.5 million Indian visitors to Malaysia,” Ibrahim added.

This is the Prime Minister’s third visit to Malaysia and the first since the India-Malaysia bilateral relationship was upgraded to a ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’ in August 2024.
