Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra minister and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat said on Saturday that the swearing-in ceremony of the new deputy chief minister “should have been later”, days after Ajit Pawar’s death in a plane crash on January 28, and insisted that the developments showed that “the chair is more important than the person”.

In a ‘hurry’ with the oath, Shirsat said, development shows that chairs are more important than peopleIt seems that this haste is a result of some internal politics of the NCP, the minister further alleged.

Pawar’s widow Sunetra Pawar is set to be elected as the leader of the NCP legislature party and then take oath as deputy CM at 5 pm, the move coming on the back of hectic political developments immediately after the tragic plane crash in Baramati.

Shirsat told reporters, “The incidents of the last two days show that the chair is more important than the people. Common people don’t like it. I personally think these incidents, the swearing-in ceremony should have been a little later.”

“The events we are witnessing now after Ajit Pawar’s death were supposed to happen someday. But Sunetra Pawar is leaving for Mumbai so soon, the statement coming from their party leaders is not acceptable in our mind. What is the rush? The swearing-in ceremony could be a week later,” he further claimed.

Shirsat also said that the merger of NCP and Sharad Pawar-led NCP may now take longer due to the changed political situation after Ajit Pawar’s death.

“It is being said that the meeting was held for the merger. Earlier, no one went against Ajit Pawar’s decision. But now that he is no more, the decision will be taken collectively. The process may take a long time,” said Shirsat.
