The case of a 30-year-old woman being gang-raped by two men inside a sleeping private bus in the Rani Bagh area outside Delhi in the early hours of Tuesday has sent shockwaves across the country. The survivor’s husband has now demanded strict action against the accused.

The incident, which reminded many of the Delhi mass murder case of a 23-year-old woman later identified as Nirbhaya, occurred on May 11. The accused were arrested the next day.

The husband of the survivor in a gang rape case
The woman’s husband, in a conversation with H.T., said that he spent the entire night waiting for her to return and only heard from her the next day, when she called from the Rani Bagh police station and asked him to come there.
When H.T. visited The family home in Pitampura, the woman’s 30-year-old husband and three daughters, aged four, six and nine, were present.
Her husband said: “On Monday, we all went to her brother’s house in Sotanburi to help him change his house. While my daughters and I returned, she stayed put. She did not carry a phone. She called her brother around 10:30 pm and he said she had left. I waited for her all night but she did not come.”
The husband added: “When I arrived (the police station), she told me that she had been raped, and that she would be taken to court to testify before the judge.”
He said that his wife was injured during the attack, and had minor injuries to her face and hands. “One of her relatives dropped her near Terminal S. We learned that she was dragged inside the bus and raped by two men. We are receiving full support from the police,” he told the news agency. PTI.
He added that the police officers on duty helped the survivor upon her arrival at the station. Her statements were recorded, she was taken to the hospital, and the accused were later arrested.
He added: “We demand that the most severe punishments be imposed on the accused.”
Delhi gang rape case
The woman, who works in a factory in Mangolpuri and lives in Pitampura with her family, was on her way home after work when the accident occurred near B-block bus stand in Saraswati Vihar area, police said.
According to her complaint, she traveled part of the journey in an auto rickshaw and then continued on foot. A sleeping bus stopped near the bus stop. The survivor told police that she asked a man standing near the bus for some time, after which he motioned for her to come closer and then pulled her inside, as mentioned in an earlier HT report.
The woman alleged that two men sexually assaulted her inside the moving bus while it was traveling several kilometers towards Nangloi. The bus later stopped near Nangloi Metro station, where the accused left it behind, police said.
A case was registered against the two men on Tuesday under Sections 64(1) (rape), 70(1) (gang-rape) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Deputy Commissioner of Police (External) Vikram Singh said.
A senior police officer told HT that the accused are Umesh Kumar and Ramendra Kumar, both originally from Uttar Pradesh and in their late 30s. Police said the two men were arrested and sent to judicial custody on Tuesday.
