A team of veterinarians recently saved the life of a nine-month-pregnant buffalo by performing a complex surgery to safely remove 66 sharp metal objects from its stomach.
The operation was conducted at the veterinary clinic in Lalari, located in the Una district of Himachal Pradesh.
Veterinarians extracted nails, wires and small metal fragments that the buffalo had swallowed.

A livestock owner, Karnail Singh, from Pariwal village in Haroli district of the district, brought his buffalo to the clinic after he noticed that they had not eaten fodder for about ten days and appeared lethargic and unhealthy.
Veterinarian Dr. Nishant Ranaut said that a detailed medical examination, blood tests and ultrasound confirmed the presence of a large number of foreign metal objects in the animal’s stomach.
Due to the critical condition of the buffalo, the owner was advised to undergo surgery immediately.
Subsequently, a team including Dr. Nishant Ranaut, Dr. Navneet Sharma, Dr. Shilpa Ranaut and Dr. Stephanie Pradhan successfully performed the surgery and removed a total of 66 sharp metal objects.
If the operation had not been performed immediately, these things could have seriously damaged the buffalo’s stomach and other internal organs, endangering its life.
After the surgery, the buffalo’s condition began to improve steadily. Ranaut added that he has seen significant pain relief and will receive continuous care under the supervision of specialist veterinarians for the next seven to 10 days.
Dr Ranaut urged livestock owners to carefully inspect animal feed – especially wheat straw and other dry feed – before feeding it to their animals. This precaution helps ensure that nails, wires, or other metal fragments do not inadvertently end up in the animals’ stomachs.
