Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 6 (PTI) Heavy rains that lashed various parts of Kerala during the night continued on Saturday morning, submerging roads, uprooting trees and damaging homes in the process and creating chaos in normal life in parts of the state.

A fire and rescue services official said a tree fell on a makeshift shed, destroying it and killing a 29-year-old man who was sleeping under it at Manalur in Thrissur.
A day ago, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in five districts – Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod – and an orange alert in six districts on Saturday.

In view of the red alert, entry to tourist areas, night travel on mountain roads as well as quarrying activities have been banned in Wayanad, Kozhikode and Kasaragod districts.
Besides, holidays have been declared for educational institutions in Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Saturday.
A red alert means very heavy rainfall of more than 20 cm in 24 hours, an orange alert means very heavy rainfall of 11 cm to 20 cm, and a yellow alert means very heavy rainfall of 6 cm to 11 cm.
