Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bharadwaj on Friday alleged a link between the surprise appointment of Anurag Kumar as Delhi’s new police commissioner and the ongoing CJP protests at Jantar Mantar.

The former Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau replaced Satish Gulcha, who had been leading the Delhi Police since August 22, 2025. Gulcha took charge of the post after the then Delhi Police Commissioner S P K Singh was sacked on August 22 last year.

“Heads are rolling,” Bharadwaj said, highlighting Gulcha’s removal from the post. He further claimed that the Center was “panicked” by the RJD’s July 20 march to Parliament, the first day of the monsoon session.

The AAP leader cited a news report by the Indian Express newspaper, citing sources as saying that the appointment of the new police chief was, among other reasons, due to concerns over the handling of the CJP protest.

“A huge organic tsunami of support…”

In his post on social media platform

“All the keyboard warriors are shouting ‘CJP is BJP’s B team’ – hold the phone! The Center never saw this coming! This huge organic tsunami of ground support for the CJP protest? A complete blind spot for police information! And suddenly – heads are rolling!”, the AAP leader said. He claimed that Gulcha had been given the “rawst shoes”.

“Now they are panicking because of the huge march on July 20 to Parliament… That is why this frantic transfer and the ‘join immediately’ order for the new commissioner!” Bharadwaj said, adding that people “will not believe what’s next” and urged them to “stay tuned.”

Anurag Kumar returns to the parent cadre; The Wangchuk fast begins on the 20th day

Kumar, a 1994 batch IPS officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union (AGMUT) cadre, will replace Gulsha just nine months before his scheduled retirement. Kumar, who traces back to his parents’ cadre, took charge of the post around noon at the Delhi Police headquarters on Jai Singh Road.

An order issued on Friday morning by Rakesh Kumar Singh, Under-Secretary of the Indian Government, said that Kumar had been appointed “with the approval of the competent authority” and “with effect from the date of his assumption of charge until further orders.”

Meanwhile, activist Sonam Wangchuk completed 20 days of indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over NEET paper leaks.

Addressing his supporters at the protest site on Friday, Wangchuk said he would “stay alive until July 20 at any cost.” “We need this energy on July 20, when we will march peacefully to Parliament. We will go together and make our appeal in the temple of democracy,” he said.
