Harivansh Narayan Singh is set to be elected unopposed as Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for a third term after no nominations were filed by the opposition, people familiar with the matter said.

Singh was nominated by President Draupadi Murmu on Friday to the Rajya Sabha. No nominations for the position were received from the opposition, giving Singh a chance to win, according to the people cited above.
The Rajya Sabha Secretariat has received five notifications of proposals to select Harivansh as Vice-Chairman for a third term.
According to people familiar with the details, the notices were handed over by Leader of the House Jagat Prakash Nadda and endorsed by Vanjun Konyak; Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Nabin, endorsed by Brij Lal; The third from Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, endorsed by Surender Nagar; Janata Dal (United) or JD(U) working president Sanjay Guha, seconded by Upendra Kushwaha; The fifth is from Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary, seconded by Milind Deora.
“No notices of application have been received from the opposition before the scheduled date, which is noon on April 16. Accordingly, the position of vice president is likely to be elected unanimously,” a person familiar with the details said.
In accordance with established practice, proposals will be moved and endorsed one by one, and if the Council adopts any proposal, the remaining proposals will become ineffective and will not be put to a vote. The elections are expected to be held by voice vote.
A member of the JD(U), Harivansh was first elected to the post in 2018 as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate. In 2020, he obtained a second term as Vice President of the Senate.
