SYDNEY, – The Australian government has called a meeting with gaming platform Roblox over reports of child grooming and exposure to graphic content on the platform, while a regulator said it would examine whether the US-listed firm delivered on child-safety commitments.
Grooming, Australia asked to meet Roblox after content complaintsCommunications Minister Annika Wells said she had written to Roblox to express “deep concern” that children were being contacted by predators and exposed to harmful material.
“The reports we’ve heard about Roblox’s graphic content and the fact that predators are actively using the platform to expose children to the creation of young people are appalling,” Wells said in a statement.
“Australian parents and kids expect more from Roblox.”
A Roblox spokesperson said the company has robust security policies and processes in place to help protect users across many other platforms, and that it will meet with Wells to discuss steps it can take to keep the community safe.
“We have filters designed to block the sharing of personal information, our chat features do not allow user-to-user photo or video sharing, and require age verification before anyone can access chat,” the spokesperson said via email.
“These same checks are used by default to restrict children and teens to only chat with others of the same age.”
Wells’ statement shows a chilly relationship between Australia and the popular gaming platform, which introduced an age-verification requirement in 2025 to limit online chats to a narrow age window and prevent child grooming.
Australia’s e-safety commissioner Julie Inman Grant welcomed Roblox’s move and recommended against including the company in a social media ban that began in December.
Inman Grant said Roblox’s age-based safety features would be tested, and noted that the platform could face fines of up to A$49.5 million if it fails to comply with the country’s online child protection laws.
Inman Grant said, “We are deeply concerned by ongoing reports of child exploitation and exposure to harmful content on the Roblox service.
