New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed an order passed by the Gujarat High Court convicting and sentencing Gujarat High Court Lawyers Association president Yatin Oza until the adjournment of the court for making scandalous statements against the judiciary in the state.

The Supreme Court also imposed a fine of Rs $2000 on Oza and said that in case of default, he would have to undergo simple imprisonment for two months.

Oza was elected Chairman of the General Civil Aviation Authority for the 19th time on December 20, 2025.

In a ruling today, a bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and A S Chandorkar directed that the full bench of the appellant should conduct a periodic review of the conduct of the appellant at biennial intervals in view of the undertaking given by him.

“The reasons stated in the order impugned by the Supreme Court do not justify any interference on the part of this court.

“However, by extending the final pardon, we are inclined to exercise our power under Article 142 of the Constitution to indefinitely suspend/suspend the conviction as well as the sentence imposed on the appellant as a result of this ruling.”

The Supreme Court said it had considered Oza’s appeal against the Supreme Court ruling of October 6, 2020, in which he was convicted.

However, the implementation of the ruling was suspended for 60 days.

The Supreme Court later continued to suspend the rulings issued by the Supreme Court.

Later, the full Supreme Court decided to withdraw Oza’s appointment as “senior counsel” following a new alleged misconduct incident in April 2024.

According to the documents, the latest decision comes in the wake of what is described as the “sixth incident” in a long history of friction between Oza and the judiciary.

On April 9, 2024, during the hearing of a writ petition, Oza allegedly accused the presiding judge of “forum shopping.”

The full court, after reviewing a video of the proceedings, noted that Oza appeared in court on behalf of the defendant without an attorney or formal authority to appear.

The Full Court’s April 15, 2024 decision stated that Oza’s conduct was “unbecoming of a senior lawyer” and that his statements were intended to “intimidate the court.”

In 2020, Oza, in a press conference, described the Gujarat High Court as a “gamblers’ den”.

The Supreme Court had previously stripped Oza of his senior position in July 2020.

However, in October 2021, the Supreme Court exercised its powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to restore Oza’s mantle for a two-year probationary period beginning on January 1, 2022, describing it as his “last and last chance.”
