The 23-year-old pregnant woman who was allegedly killed by her husband in her Faridabad home on Thursday was routinely kept inside the house for up to 10 hours while he was at work because he suspected her of having an extramarital affair, police said on Saturday.

Investigators said the suspect, Amit Gupta, 26, who is still on the run, forced his wife, Neha Kumari, into a bucket of water before fleeing. He routinely locked her inside their newly built house in Panchsheel Colony Part II until he stopped going to the office last week, police said. A senior police officer, familiar with the investigation, said Gupta left for his job as a graphic designer in Lajpat Nagar, Delhi, between 8.30am and 9am and returned around 7pm.

“Family members revealed that he had recently started locking the main door from outside while leaving to ensure that his wife could not go out or anyone could enter to meet her due to his suspicions. She shared this development with her family members but she never resisted,” said the officer who requested anonymity.

“The neighbors also confirmed that Neha, who was six months pregnant, was remaining confined inside her newly built house. He was not even allowing his wife to visit the market alone,” the officer added.

Yashpal Yadav, public relations officer of Faridabad police, said Neha’s father bought land but registered it in Gupta’s name due to pressure and also built a house for the couple. He added that a medical committee performed an autopsy on the body on Saturday, and is awaiting the detailed report.
