Delhi University on Friday rejected Congress member Rahul Gandhi’s claim that the university is using interviews to filter out students. In a detailed statement, the university said that the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha should have verified the facts before making such statements.

In a post on X, Delhi University said that admission is based primarily on Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores and that interviews are not part of the standard admission process for most undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

“Delhi University admits students mainly based on CUET scores, and the standard admission process does not require interviews for most undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. If the Leader of the Opposition is referring to appointments (such as faculty posts), in the recent past the university has appointed thousands of teachers across all categories,” the Delhi University posted.

Du also said, “We strongly object to such comments, as they create an unfavorable environment in the university. The Leader of the Opposition should have checked the facts before making such a statement. @EduMinOfIndia.”

What did Rahul Gandhi say?

Delhi University’s clarification came after Rahul Gandhi, who spoke at an event on Friday, alleged that interviews at Delhi University were being used to eliminate students on the basis of caste.

“I went to Delhi University. Interview is a way to eliminate students. They ask about your caste, and then you fail in the interview,” Gandhi reportedly said while addressing an event titled ‘Samvidhaan Sammelan’ in Lucknow to mark the birth anniversary of Bahujan Samaj Party founder Kanshi Ram.

The Congress leader also targeted the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), claiming that backward classes lack representation within its organizational structure, the report added.

“Take out the list of RSS organizations, those who are pracharaks, at the Centre, you will not find one OBC, one Dalit, one Adivasi. This is completely against the Constitution,” Gandhi said, according to ANI.

In its statement, Delhi University emphasized that admission is transparently based on merit through CUET scores, and that interviews are not part of the admission process for most programmes.
