Eight people were rescued after a fire broke out in a residential building in South Delhi’s New Friends Colony (NFC) on Sunday afternoon. The rescued people included four children, two women and two men, officials said, adding that a fire was reported from the air conditioner and other household items on the first floor of the building.

The Delhi Fire Department received a fire call at around 3:50 p.m., officials said. There were no reports of human injuries, but two dogs died in the fire, according to preliminary information.

Fire officials also denied reports that a child died in the fire incident.

The incident comes just days after a deadly fire at a bed and breakfast hotel in south Delhi’s busy Hauz Rani area claimed the lives of at least 21 people.

Several people, including a woman holding a child, jumped from different floors of the five-storey building after a massive fire broke out on Wednesday, as locals rushed to spread mattresses on the road below in a desperate bid to save lives.

As thick black smoke billowed from the windows and flames spread rapidly through the building, terrified residents were seen smashing window panes, leaning out of vents and desperately calling for help. With stairs and interior corridors choked with smoke, many guests appeared to have no choice but to jump from the upper floors.
