The Pakistan News Agency quoted the Uttar Pradesh Police as saying that the young man, called Rizwan Ahmed, a resident of the Chawani area of Badrawna town in Kushinagar in the state of Uttar Pradesh, was subjected to examination during the investigation into a case registered by the Special Cell. After his arrest, the young man was transferred to the national capital.

Ahmed was taken into custody by a 10-member team led by Inspector Nishant Dahiya. The police team reached Badrawna late on Saturday evening and arrested Ahmed with the help of local police, a senior police officer told PTI.

The agency quoted a Delhi Police source as saying that after the young man’s arrest, a lot of “incriminating materials” were recovered. The special cell also confiscated the youth’s mobile phone, laptop and other electronic devices for examination.

HT has not independently verified this information.

According to UP Police, Ahmed’s past links with ISIS are also under the lens. The young man had traveled to Mumbai about a decade ago in search of work, but was imprisoned there from 2017 to 2023 after his name appeared in another terrorism-related case. Press TI reported that explosives were found from his room at the time, along with phone records showing international calls and links to ISIS.

Kushinagar Superintendent of Police (SP) told PTI Keshav Kumar that information has been collected about his family members and contacts, with orders issued for tight vigil in the area. The cops tracked the youth’s movements for a long time, a Delhi Police source said, adding that a team was sent after locating him in Kushinagar.

Four members of the ‘terrorism unit’ held by UP ATS

The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad has arrested four members suspected of being a terror unit, officials said on Friday. The four had Pakistani employees and were accused of involvement in planning attacks on key installations, including railway infrastructure, Press Ti reported, citing officials.

ATS traced the network of individuals based on intelligence inputs. These individuals were allegedly in touch with their officials through social media platforms and were involved in anti-national activities aimed at spreading fear.

The investigation revealed that the main activist of the network, identified as Saqib alias “Satan”, a resident of the Meerut area, was in contact with the dealers via encrypted platforms, including Telegram, Signal and Instagram. International phone numbers, including those from Afghanistan, were recovered from his contact list, sources told PTI.
