Delhi LG orders ‘full security’ after brigadier and son assaulted in Vasant Enclave for opposing drinking in public places

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Tuesday strongly objected to the alleged assault on an Army Brigadier and his son for opposing drinking in public outside their home in Vasant area.

The Delhi LG said he was “deeply concerned” about the incident and ordered the cops to provide complete security to the officer’s family. “I personally spoke to Brigadier BS Arora to inquire about the incident and their safety,” LG Sandhu said, adding that he also spoke to the Superintendent of Police and the Commissioner of Police, directing them to ensure a thorough and speedy investigation.

Brigadier Parminder Singh Arora, 53, and his son Tejas Arora, 23, were assaulted outside their home in Vasant Enclave on Saturday evening after they objected to two people drinking inside a luxury car.

The Army later confirmed that Arora was an Indian Army officer and was on leave in Delhi at the time of the incident. According to the Delhi LG statement, the 23-year-old who was assaulted as a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology.

Assault in front of a policeman?

As reported earlier by HT, the brigadier and his son claimed that they were assaulted in front of a police officer and their complaints were not responded to immediately after lodging a complaint at Vasant Vihar police station.

Later, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel also said that an inspector was sent to the district lines after a mistake was detected on their part and action was initiated.

What happened over the weekend?

The assault allegedly took place on Saturday around 10 pm when the dean and his son Tejas went out for a walk. According to them, they saw two people drinking inside a Mercedes Benz car parked in the area and asked them to stop.

They said: “We knew that they were not from the building we live in, so I asked them not to drink in public places,” claiming that the passengers inside the car refused.

According to the complaint, a junior police officer arrived when the calls were made but necessary action was taken. The complaints allege that 7-8 people arrived at the scene and then assaulted them, as the police officer “stood by and did nothing.”

The dean’s wife also alleged that some comments were made to “abuse” her modesty while trying to save her son and husband.
