Meanwhile, Congress party units across the country, including Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir and Assam, staged a protest against police charges against students and detention of party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. Rahul, Priyanka and other Congress leaders staged a protest outside the Prime Minister’s residence on Tuesday. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was also arrested for a dharna outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence.

On the orders of the Delhi High Court, activist Sonam Wangchuk has been shifted to Medanta Hospital, even as he continues his indefinite fast. Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office, Jitendra Singh, and Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on Tuesday night visited a Gurugram hospital to inquire about the activist’s health, news agency ANI reported, citing sources.

A number of demonstrators were arrested and injured after police intervention in the Chalo Sansad march.

At least 70 protesters were arrested during the Chalo Sansad protest march on Monday. Subsequently, the CJP, Aam Aadmi Party and others assured free legal assistance to the student protesters who were arrested.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators joined the call to march to Parliament. Delhi Police did not give approval for the march and Section 163 of BNSS was imposed. Despite blockades on main roads, the closure of metro stations and the suspension of mobile internet, protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar before heading towards Parliament.

By afternoon, areas including Connaught Place, Patel Chowk, Raisina Road, India Gate and Ashoka Road turned into standoff areas as police used batons and tear gas to disperse the protesters, HT had earlier reported. Several protesters were injured and admitted to Lady Hardinge and RML Hospitals, with one woman receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of the latter medical facility.

Delhi Police said 118 individuals were injured during the march, and claimed that protesters displayed “unruly” and violent behavior by attacking individuals with stones and other objects while violating prohibitory orders despite repeated warnings.

Dharmendra Pradhan reacts to Kunj’s protest

Union Education Minister Pradhan criticized the protest organized by the Congress outside the Prime Minister’s residence, alleging that the party is “using students as political tools to manufacture unrest” during the monsoon session of Parliament.

“Mr @RahulGandhi and @INCIndia have chosen to organize a dharna outside the residence of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, causing inconvenience to the public and ignoring established security protocols,” Pradhan said in a post on X. He claimed that Congress is a “political spectacle around democratic debate” despite the government’s willingness to debate. “For Rahul Gandhi, it is not about the students. It is about manufacturing confrontation after opening every real avenue for discussion,” Pradhan said.

The Union Minister said the government “remains 100% committed to discussing NEET and addressing all the real concerns of our youth in the House”. He added that the students deserved “much better than being treated as props in a political campaign.”
