sack: More than 50 Maoists carry a joint grant ₹1.61 crore surrendered to the police in Sukma and Bijapur districts of Chhattisgarh’s Bastar division on Saturday, a senior police officer said.

Of the 51 cadres who surrendered, 34 are women. While 30 Maoists, including 20 women, have surrendered in Bijapur district, Bastar Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P said another 21, including 14 women, have joined the mainstream in neighboring Sukma district under the ‘Puna Margame’ (from rehabilitation to social reunification) initiative.

In Bijapur, Maoists belonging to South Sub-Zonal Bureau surrendered to senior police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officers. Among the 30 cadres, Boti Podium alias Malla (23), platoon party committee member, Sukhram Madakam (24) and Reena Poonem (25), both party members and members of various Maoist companies, carried the award. ₹8 lakh each.

Sundarraj said the surrendered Maoists expressed disillusionment with the Maoist ideology and said they were influenced by the state government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy.

He added that the development was the result of the state government’s comprehensive anti-Maoist policy, steady operations by security forces and concerted efforts focused on peace, dialogue and development.
