In one of the operations, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs to secure the extradition of Rana, who was brought back to the country by a team of Haryana Police on Saturday.

“The subject, Abhay alias Abhay Rana, was wanted by the Haryana Police in a number of criminal cases registered in Haryana, involving offenses such as extortion, criminal intimidation, running an organized crime syndicate, attempt to murder and issuing threats to life,” a CBI spokesperson said in a statement.

More than 160 wanted criminals have been successfully returned to India in the past few years through coordination through Interpol channels, officials said.

In the related case against Rana registered in Karnal, the person, along with his associates, allegedly threatened local businessmen through social media platforms, including WhatsApp calls, to pay ransom, the statement said.

She added, “Those who did not comply with the demands were attacked by members of the union, and after the investigation was completed, an indictment was filed against the subject before the court competent in the case in question.”

The RBI, India’s nodal body for all Interpol-related matters, has obtained the Red Notice issued against Rana, the officials said.

The notice alerts all INTERPOL member states around the world to the arrest of a fugitive wanted by another member state.

“After the person was geo-located and arrested by the Portuguese authorities, an extradition request was made against him. After due process, the Portuguese authorities agreed to extradite the person to India,” the statement read.
