Why were two board exams held this year for the tenth grade?
CBSE has introduced a two-board examination system for Class 10 from the academic session of 2026. Under this system, the main board examination was conducted from February 17 to March 11, 2026, while the second board examination was conducted from May 15 to May 21, 2026.
The second test gave eligible students who appeared in the main test an additional opportunity to improve their performance. For regular students of the Class of 2026, the Board took into account the best of the two offers while preparing the final score.
Nearly 60 percent of students improved their performance
A total of 6,64,027 candidates registered for CBSE Class 10 Second Board Examination 2026, of which 6,63,777 appeared. Among them, 5,13,955 students took the exam to improve their scores in the main boards, with 3,08,095 (59.95%) candidates successfully improving their performance.
While 1,49,822 students appeared in the cabin category, 78,503 of them passed the exam, resulting in a success rate of 52.40% in the cabin category. After combining the results of the main and second board examinations, the overall pass percentage for the batch of 2026 class 10 is 96.78%.
