The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested a colonel of the Army Ordnance Corps, Eastern Command, in connection with a smuggling operation. $Agency officials said there were 50,000 bribery cases.
The officer has been detained in Kolkata under the Prevention of Corruption Act and will be taken to Delhi for further questioning, officials said.
According to the First Information Report filed by the RBI on May 18, Colonel Himanshu Bali, posted in the Army Corps at Fort William in Kolkata, was accused of indulging in corrupt practices on behalf of a Kanpur-based private person and his company in awarding tenders, approving substandard samples and clearing outstanding and inflated bills in lieu of bribes.

A private person, Akshat Agrawal, and his company, Eastern Global Limited (Kanpur) have also been booked by the federal agency.
“… Akshat Agrawal, along with his father Mayank Agrawal, a resident of Kanpur, remained in regular contact with Colonel Bali to obtain undue favors for their companies through illegal means, in connivance with other unknown officials,” the FIR said.
The agency also said that several tenders were awarded to their companies by the Eastern Command in Kolkata, allegedly “in exchange for huge bribes paid to Bali and other unknown officers”.
According to the CBI, Akshat Agrawal and Bali were in regular contact regarding the tender awarded to the company in March-April 2026.
“On 22 April, both of them met in person outside normal business hours at Park Street, Kolkata, to discuss matters relating to this tender. Subsequently, on 24 April, the tender was successfully awarded to Eastern Global Limited as a result of alleged unjustified preference by Colonel Bali.”
On May 16, Bali “contacted Akshat and reminded him of the bribe amount payable as per the earlier commitment and ordered the same to be delivered in Delhi-National Capital area,” the FIR said.
Akshat was making arrangements for dispatch, the FIR said $50 lakh through remittance channels to the contact of the army officer in Delhi on Monday.
Hizb ut-Tahrir contacted the army to comment on the arrest. There has been no response yet.
