Bhupen Borah joins BJP days after quitting Congress ahead of Assam electionsFormer Congress worker Sanju Bora also changed his stance and joined the saffron party with him.Borah had resigned earlier this week, but the Congress high command did not accept his resignation. Senior party leaders visited his residence to convince him to reconsider, and Rahul Gandhi also spoke to him. Bora sought some time to review his decision, but a day later, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited his home and announced that he would formally join the BJP on February 22.After his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Bora wrote in his post: “32 years vs 32 hours – the difference is clear.”Reacting to this development, Assam Communist Party chief Gaurav Gogoi asserted that Bora’s exit will not affect the party’s prospects. “Congress is like an ocean; we are all just drops of water in it. Congress existed long before our fathers and grandfathers existed. Bhupen Bora’s departure will not affect our party’s prospects in the Assembly elections,” he said.Assam is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections later this year, with the Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Prime Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, aiming to retain power while facing a renewed challenge from the Congress.
