In an important move aimed at promoting communal harmony ahead of Eid al-Adha (Bakrid), Iqbal Ansari, a prominent local figure and former litigator in the Babri Masjid land dispute case, has urged the Muslim community to completely avoid sacrificing cows during Eid.

Ansari also formally asked the government to classify the cow as India’s “national animal” and “national heritage”, arguing that granting legal constitutional status would put a final end to cow-related vigilantes and mob lynchings.
Speaking to ANI regarding his initiative, Ansari stressed the importance of respecting the religious sentiments of neighbors to protect the social fabric of the country.
“This is a matter of our nation, the Hindu faith, and Islam. While sacrifice has been an integral part of Islamic traditions for generations during Eid al-Adha, we must respect the laws that govern our land. Muslims should never sacrifice animals that are legally prohibited. In India, our fellow Hindus revere the cow as ‘Gomata’. If we eat its milk, it holds the status of a mother. We must return this kindness with respect. Muslims should serve cows,” Ansari told ANI. Feed them and completely avoid slaughtering cows.”
In support of his appeal with religious and legal frameworks, the former litigator pointed out that cow slaughter is neither compatible with Islamic law nor with the Indian Constitution.
He added: “The constitution forbids this, and Islamic teachings have forbidden it for centuries. Hadith literature indicates that the Prophet Muhammad described cow’s milk as extremely beneficial and its ghee as a cure, while he advises against eating its meat. True patriotism means respecting the laws of the country and the faith of your neighbors. And those who respect the law are the true sons of the earth.”
To reinforce this message of mutual respect, Ansari recently met several prominent seers and saints in the temple city of Ayodhya and presented them with artistic idols in the shape of a cow. The gesture sparked a new nationwide debate on livestock conservation and religious practices ahead of the upcoming festival.
Concluding his appeal, Ansari called on society and the state to take action.
“I urge all Muslims to perform sacrifices strictly using animals permitted by state legislation and Islamic jurisprudence. At the same time, I appeal to the government to declare the cow a national treasure, establish well-equipped shelters, and ensure comprehensive care and fodder for it,” he said.
