A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the border region between Afghanistan and Tajikistan and the Hindu Kush region, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ).

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. However, residents of places where the tremors were felt shared videos and experiences, including User X posting a video of fans and lights swaying during the earthquake.

The tremors were also felt in Srinagar, Kashmir, and a video clip published by ANI news agency showed a chandelier, a fan and a lamp moving. Another video shared by a resident showed a hanging clock swaying lightly.

The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 175 kilometers, sparked a short wave of panic among residents. Depth allows seismic waves to travel farther, which explains why tremors are felt across northern India.

Residents left homes and offices

Residents of Delhi-NCR and nearby areas reported feeling mild tremors due to the tremors, with some stepping out of their homes and offices as a precaution.

Light tremors were also felt in other parts of northern India, including Punjab and Haryana, and the tremor around 9:46 p.m. lasted only a few seconds. Residents in several areas, especially those who live in multi-storey buildings, said that they noticed sudden tremors and vibrations.

“I felt a strong tremor that lasted for a few seconds,” Baldev Chand, a Chandigarh resident who lives in a second-floor apartment, told news agency PTI. Another resident, Ajay Kumar, who lives on the 11th floor of an apartment building in Zirakpur in Punjab, confirmed that the tremors lasted for a few seconds. “We thought of hurrying but the tremors stopped soon,” Kumar told PTI.
