Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly registered an attempt to murder after 15-year-old Aditya Vir Gangwar, nephew of Sugarcane Development Minister Sanjay Gangwar, was injured when a banned nylon thread cut his neck on Shyamganj Bridge, police confirmed on Wednesday.
Assistant Inspector Yogesh Kumar Lokhana lodged a first information report (FIR) at Baradari police station on Tuesday against unidentified persons involved in sale, use and circulation of the banned kite series.
A case has been registered under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as the kite string poses a serious threat to human life and can cause fatal injuries, the police said.
According to the FIR, Aditya Veer Gangwar was heading towards Gandhi Udyan at around 7 am on Monday when the accident occurred near Shyamganj flyover.
The sharp nylon thread wrapped around his neck and penetrated it “like a sharp-edged weapon,” causing deep wounds. While trying to free himself, he also sustained injuries to his hands. Police said the accident left him with serious injuries to his neck, lips, ear and face, and parts of his buttocks and lower neck were also reportedly seriously injured.
He suffered massive blood loss and was shifted to a private hospital near Vikas Bhawan, where he is still undergoing treatment. Doctors described the injuries as serious and potentially life-threatening.
The investigation has been entrusted to Assistant Inspector Akhilesh Upadhyay, who is tasked with identifying those responsible for the sale and use of banned substances.
Following the incident, Minister Sanjay Gangwar visited the hospital and expressed concern over the continued availability of nylon kite strings despite the statewide ban.
He called for strict law enforcement against those involved in its sale and distribution, and directed officials to take effective measures to prevent similar incidents.
SSP Bareilly Anurag Arya informed that police teams then conducted raids at several locations across Bareilly in search of the banned kite string. However, officials said they did not recover a significant amount of the banned thread during the operation.
