A civilian employee working at Chabua Air Base in Assam was arrested on Sunday on charges of spying for Pakistan and sharing sensitive information with Pakistani agents, Rajasthan Police said.

The accused was arrested in a joint operation by Rajasthan Intelligence and Air Force Intelligence, PTI reported, citing Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) Prafulla Kumar.

How did the police arrest the accused?

The investigation that led to the arrest of the accused, Sumit Kumar (36), began after another suspect, Jhaparam, was arrested from Jaisalmer earlier this year in January.

After the arrest in January, further investigations and interrogations revealed Kumar’s involvement in espionage activities for Pakistan.

Kumar is a resident of Uttar Pradesh and has been posted as a Multi Tasking Officer (MTS) at Air Force Station Chabua. He collected information about the Air Force station using his position and used social media to pass it to his Pakistani handlers.

During the investigation, it was found that Kumar was in constant contact with Pakistani agents.

The accused had been sharing information in exchange for money since 2023

Kumar Harb was arrested in Chabua in a joint operation by Air Force Intelligence and Rajasthan Intelligence and was taken to Jaipur for interrogation. During the joint interrogation, he revealed that he had been in touch with the ISI and shared sensitive information with it since 2023 and had received money in return.

Among the information shared by the accused included sensitive details about facilities at the air base, locations of fighter jets, missile systems, information related to personnel and more.

The accused even helped his Pakistani handlers create social media accounts using mobile phone numbers he registered in his name.

The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act 1923 and BNS 2023. Further investigation is underway.
