'All-India problem': SC attacks freebies, asks parties to rethink

New Delhi: New Delhi: In a scathing criticism of governments resorting to freebies, the SC on Thursday said that distribution of handouts and direct bank transfer of funds will encourage laziness that will be detrimental to nation building.ICC bench Surya Kant and Justices Joymalia Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi said countries should instead invest in good schools, hospitals, training centers and job creation projects to ensure decent livelihoods. The comments came on the basis of a petition filed by the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation challenging Rule 23 of the Electricity (Amendment) Act, 2024, which imposes financial discipline on the Discos and could hamper the free or subsidized power schemes of the Tamil Nadu government. “This is a universal problem in India and we are not referring to TN alone. It is high time politicians, leaders and political parties, irrespective of their ideologies along with social activists, reconsider such free schemes,” the CJI said.
