Two factions of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) have filed their petitions and are under scrutiny, Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker J C D Prabhakar said on Saturday.

The senior leader of the ruling Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) was responding to a query when reporters asked about legislators from the AIADMK camp extending their support to the ruling TVK during the crucial floor test held on May 13 in the Assembly.

“Both sides (AIADMK) have filed their petitions. All these petitions are under scrutiny. An appropriate decision will be taken at the appropriate time,” he said.

The division within the AIADMK emerged after the party’s poor performance in the recent polls in Tamil Nadu. Soon after the results were announced on May 4, a section of lawmakers were asked to stay at a private resort in Puducherry. On May 7, AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) held closed-door discussions with them.

However, on May 11 before the vote of confidence for the ruling TVK, a split in the AIADMK emerged in the Assembly: 25 MLAs under the SP Velumani and C Ve Shanmugam faction supported the TVK, while the remaining 22 under the EPS opposed the floor test.

Soon after the development, the EPS and Shanmugham factions separately submitted a memorandum to Speaker JCD Prabhakar, asking him to exclude legislators from their factions.

Prabhakar, who emerged victorious from the Thousand Lights constituency in Chennai, while mentioning the infrastructure boost, said he would visit the stadiums in his constituency and take action based on the requests made by the players.

He said that wherever there is a possibility of establishing indoor stadiums, they will be created.

“We will visit all the stadiums. Whatever sport is being played there – be it cricket, shuttle or badminton – we will find out the requirements of the players and do the work,” he said.

“By forming an association with public welfare members under the Thousand Lights Actions, it will be taken to serve the people in the constituency,” he said.

“With the blessings of God and the Prime Minister, we have begun our work in the region. I ask for your full cooperation. Thank you.” He added.

TVK emerged victorious in the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, 10 seats short of the majority needed to form the government. With the support of the Congress, Left parties, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Viduthalai Chiruthigal Katchi (VCK), it formed the government.

CM C Joseph Vijay won the vote of confidence in the state assembly on Wednesday with the support of 144 MLAs, including legislators from his party TVK. The IUML, TCK CPI, CPI(M) and Congress also supported Vijay, taking TVK’s tally to 117, the mark required to prove a majority.

Vijay’s tally improved as an internal rift opened in the AIADMK in the assembly.
